Recent Research

Psychotherapy really works:

“A German research group made an in-depth study of the effects and outcomes of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy (Beutel et al. 2004). Forty-seven patients (86% in psychoanalytic therapy, 34% in psychodynamic therapy; mean duration 49 months) were assessed before, during and seven years after concluding treatment. The assessment included an evaluation of psychiatric problems, measures of subjective satisfaction with life, and the collection of health insurance data. At the start of their treatment all patients had a DSM axis I diagnosis, which indicates a clinical disorder. The most prevalent diagnosis was affective disorder (for example depression and anxiety) at 60%. Conversely, at the follow-up, seven years after completing the treatment, distress levels in these patients were far below the original level and comparable to those of a non-clinical sample from the general population. The number of sick-days per year strongly decreased from the pre-treatment assessment point until the end of treatment, and then remained stable during the seven years of follow-up.”
